Benefits of Fee for Service Care

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is the primary resource used by professionals to diagnose and clarify mental disorders. The DSM is a political tool; it’s content decided upon by powerful establishments with internal agendas. In the twentieth century, America’s advances in medicine and technology flourished. This led to the body (and subsequently the mind) becoming ‘fixable’ and a ‘thing’ to be diagnosed and treated. Currently, a diagnosis must be given to bill insurance.

As the medical model polarizes the mind and body, as well as the ideas of healthy/unhealthy, patients are deemed mentally healthy or mentally ill. No middle ground option exists between these polar extremes. The human experience is vast, complex, and dynamic. Black and white diagnostic criteria that labels people ‘healthy’ or ‘unhealthy’ limits work with clients and the ability to receive care that is catered to personal needs.

In Western culture, the polarization of healthy and unhealthy contributes to suffering. People may internalize disapproval if their lives appear to be anything other than what society label’s as ‘healthy.’ This can deny each person and relationship a unique life experience.

I do not bill through insurance. Instead, I use a fee for service model, in order to provide flexible professional care that honors each person’s individually and unique needs.
